Nutrition – My Story
As we eat, so are we.
Health and nutrition go hand in hand, and I know from first hand experience the effect the food we eat has on our bodies. In my late 20’s, I was feeling very unwell and at a loss as to what to do to restore my health. However, through changing my eating habits, I turned my health around within a matter of weeks.
My Story – Part 1
In 1993, I’d been feeling very unwell. I was feeling tired and lethargic, I was struggling to finish meals, unable to eat more than a few mouthfulls before I’d feel nauseous and full. I had a bloated stomach after meals, I was losing weight and had very dry skin on my face, but became red and inflamed when I applied moisturisers. I had always been fit, loved playing sports and played competitive squash. However, I was now finding myself having/hoping to have a nap in my car before squash games after work, which normally I’d breezed through. I was beginning to think there was something seriously wrong with me and so I went to my doctor. Unfortunately, his attitude and advice made me feel worse rather than better, and I left his office no further forward in my search for an answer to my health issues.
Months later at work, May, the practice cleaner asked me for my advice on a diet she was going to try. She left me a book and asked if I’d read it to see what I thought. I was always a bit sceptical about diets but agreed to read the book. The book was called ‘Food Combining for Health‘ by Doris Grant. Whilst reading the book I realised this was the solution I needed. I gave the book back to May, thanking her, and told her I was going to go on the diet myself. I did, and within two weeks, my health improved dramatically. My energy levels were better than ever, no more napping before squash matches, my digestion improved, I was able to eat a full meal and I no longer needed to use copious amounts of moisturiser on my face. I was amazed and saw at first hand the importance of what I ate and the effect of what I ate had on my health.
To further my interest in nutrition, I took Healthexcel’s Metabolic Typing Course and became a metabolic typing advisor. Metabolic Typing involves providing a customised diet and supplements to suit the unique body chemistry and requirements of the individual, and explains why say, the Atkins Diet is effective for some but not for others.
My Story – Part 2
My health had started to deteriorate again. I was feeling tired and lethargic and was carrying a few uncharacteristic extra pounds. I took a test which showed that although my physical age was 50, my biological age was 75. Biological age indicates the rate at which the cells in your body are aging compared to your actual chronological age. It is calculated in part by the number and severity of imbalances, compromises and deficiencies in your body and the impact they have on various related systems.
My results showed that I had a very severe nutrient deficiency that was contributing to and affecting every major system in my body – especially the adrenal/stress systems. Adrenal overwhelm is classically associated with the excessive production of stress hormones and inflammatory metabolic waste, which contribute to a slower metabolism and weight gain associated with the metabolic syndrome and digestive compromise.
I started a protocol of supplements and self-care to saturate my body with the minerals, nutrients and lifestyle choices I needed to bring my body back into balance, which is an ongoing process. I continue to keep up to date with nutritional and health trends and I am always on the look-out for new recipes to cook.

Supplements
As our lives get busier and more stressful, we can’t always give our bodies the nutrients they need through diet alone. This is where nutritional supplements may be required.
